چکیده

Most bounded suboptimal algorithms in the search literature have been developed so as to be -admissible. This means that the solutions found by these algorithms are guaranteed to be no more than a factor of (1 + ) greater than optimal. However, this is not the only possible form of suboptimality bounding. For example, another possible suboptimality guarantee is that of additive bounding, which requires that the cost of the solution found is no more than the cost of the optimal solution plus a constant γ. In this work, we consider the problem of developing algorithms so as to satisfy a given, and arbitrary, suboptimality requirement. To do so, we develop a theoretical framework which can be used to construct algorithms for a large class of possible suboptimality paradigms. We then use the framework to develop additively bounded algorithms, and show that in practice these new algorithms effectively trade-off additive solution suboptimality for runtime.

Search-Based Planning with Provable Suboptimality Bounds for Continuous State Spaces

Search-based planning is widely used for mobile robot motion planning because of its guarantees of optimality and completeness. In continuous state-spaces, however, most existing approaches have significant limitations in terms of optimality and completeness because of the underlying grid used. We propose an approach that eliminates the dependency on grids by using more general equivalence clas...

Weighted anytime search: new schemes for optimization over graphical models

Weighted search (best-first or depth-first) refers to search with a heuristic function multiplied by a constant w [Pohl (1970)]. The paper shows for the first time that for graphical models optimization queries weighted best-first and weighted depth-first Branch and Bound search schemes are competitive energy-minimization anytime optimization algorithms. Weighted best-first schemes were investi...

Multi-Heuristic A

The performance of heuristic search-based planners depends heavily on the quality of the heuristic function used to focus the search. These algorithms work fast and generate high-quality solutions, even for high-dimensional problems, as long as they are given a well-designed heuristic function. On the other hand, their performance can degrade considerably if there are large heuristic depression...

Truncated Incremental Search: Faster Replanning by Exploiting Suboptimality

Incremental heuristic searches try to reuse their previous search efforts whenever these are available. As a result, they can often solve a sequence of similar planning problems much faster than planning from scratch. State-of-the-art incremental heuristic searches such as LPA*, D* and D* Lite all work by propagating cost changes to all the states on the search tree whose gvalues (the costs of ...
